Math Parent Letters
Phonics skills we will focus on this year:
- Number of vowel sounds = number of syllables
- short vowels (CVC, CCVC)
- consonant blends(dr, tr, st, bl, ng, nk, etc.)
- consonant digraphs (sh, ch, th, etc.)
- inflectional endings -s, -ing, and the three sounds of -ed /d/ /t/ /ed/
- silent -e words (CVCe)
- FLOSZ rule (double the consonant f, l, s, or z if it is at the end of a syllable or word directly following a short vowel)
- /k/ sound is spelled -ck if it comes at the end of a word directly following a short vowel
- /k/ sound is spelled with a k at the beginning of a word if it is directly followed by an -e or -i
- /k/ sound is spelled with a c at the beginning of a word if it is directly followed by an -a, -o, or -u
- vowel sound of -y (usually at the end of a 1 syllable word the -y says /i/ such as fly and at the end of a 2 syllable word the -y says /e/ such as puppy.
- R controlled vowels -ore vs -or (-or usually comes at the beginning or middle of the word and -ore is usually at the end of the word), -ar, -ur, -ir, -er
- The long /a/ sound is usually spelled -ai in the middle of a word and -ay at the end of a syllable or word
- Long vowel digraphs: "oa" and "ow" (Long /o/ is usually spelled "oa" in the beginning or middle of a syllable and "ow" at the end of a word or syllable. )
- Three letter consonant blends: "scr" and "spr"
